{"id":763,"date":"2007-11-15T00:10:21","date_gmt":"2007-11-14T23:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maurograziani.org\/wordpress\/archives\/763"},"modified":"2025-08-22T18:12:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T16:12:33","slug":"barry-truax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maurograziani.org\/wordpress\/archives\/763","title":{"rendered":"Barry Truax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/Barry-3.jpg\" alt=\"Truax ca. 1949\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"20\" vspace=\"10\" width=\"225\" \/>La prima volta che incontrai Barry Truax (nella foto a 2\/3 anni), al CSC di Padova alla fine degli anni &#8217;70, io ero uno studente e lui era gi\u00e0 un guru della computer music che aveva al suo attivo il POD (un software per la composizione assistita da computer) e una convincente sistematizzazione compositiva della modulazione di frequenza e alcuni brani che la sfruttavano, come Sonic Landscape e Androginy.<\/p>\n<p>Gi\u00e0 allora Truax utilizzava il concetto di &#8220;paesaggio sonoro&#8221;, mutuato dal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/wsp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Soundscape Project<\/a>, di cui aveva fatto parte nel 1973. Pi\u00f9 tardi sarebbe stato uno dei pionieri della sintesi granulare.<\/p>\n<p>I lavori di Barry che preferisco sono le composizioni elettroacustiche in cui d\u00e0 prova di grande maestria nella elaborazione del suono, come &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/basilica.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basilica<\/a>&#8220;, interamente basato sulle sonorit\u00e0 delle tre campane della cattedrale di Quebec City (Truax \u00e8 canadese, vive e lavora a Vancouver) o &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/temple.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temple<\/a>&#8220;, elaborazione di campioni vocali registrati nella riverberante cattedrale di San Bartolomeo, a Busetto (Italia) o ancora &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/steam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steam<\/a>&#8220;, dedicato alla grande variet\u00e0 di fischietti e corni da nebbia che popolano il paesaggio sonoro del Canada. Nello stesso modo mi piacciono i suoi brani di sintesi, come &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/~truax\/arras.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arras<\/a>&#8220;, ispirato agli arazzi dell&#8217;omonima citt\u00e0 francese. (estratti audio sotto la parte in inglese)<br \/>\n_________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Truax from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barry_Truax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barry Truax<\/strong> (born <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1947\" title=\"1947\">1947<\/a>) is a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian\" title=\"Canadian\">Canadian<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Composer\" title=\"Composer\">composer<\/a> who specializes in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real-time_computing\" title=\"Real-time computing\">real-time<\/a> implementations of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Granular_synthesis\" title=\"Granular synthesis\">granular synthesis<\/a>, often of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sampling_%28music%29\" title=\"Sampling (music)\">sampled<\/a> sounds, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soundscape\" title=\"Soundscape\">soundscapes<\/a>. He developed the first ever implementation of real-time granular synthesis, in 1986, the first to use a sample as the source of a granular composition in 1987&#8217;s <em>Wings of Nike<\/em>, and was the first composer to explore the range between synchronic and asynchronic granular synthesis in 1986&#8217;s <em>Riverrun<\/em>. The real-time technique suites or emphasizes <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auditory_stream\" title=\"Auditory stream\">auditory streams<\/a>, which, along with soundscapes, inform his aesthetic.<br \/>\nTruax teaches both <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electroacoustic_music\" title=\"Electroacoustic music\">electroacoustic music<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_music\" title=\"Computer music\">computer music<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Acoustic_communication&amp;action=edit\" class=\"new\" title=\"Acoustic communication\">acoustic communication<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Fraser_University\" title=\"Simon Fraser University\">Simon Fraser University<\/a>. He was one of the original members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=World_Soundscape_Project&amp;action=edit\" class=\"new\" title=\"World Soundscape Project\">World Soundscape Project<\/a>.
